An Aquatic Therapy Institute Certification consists of extended theory and practical knowledge for the appropriate topic.

Level 1: Provides an in-depth introduction to aquatic therapy. Perfect for beginner therapists who are looking to start treating in-water! Includes 9 hours of content.

Level 2: Currently in development and to be released in Winter of 2026. Will consist of information to extend the knowledge of a current aquatic therapist. This level will include more information regarding specific conditions and specific programs to be used in the pool.

Pediatric Level: Currently in development and to be released in 2027. In the pediatric level certification, you will learn more about how to treat children as an aquatic therapist.

Level 1 Clinician Certification

The ATI Level 1 Clinician Certification is designed for clinicians who want a clear, structured introduction to aquatic therapy and a stronger foundation for clinical practice in the pool.

Whether you are new to aquatic rehabilitation or looking to strengthen your understanding, this certification provides the essential knowledge needed to apply aquatic therapy more safely, effectively, and confidently.

The core competency domains discussed in the certification are:

The Foundations of Aquatic Therapy

Safety & Risk Management

Clinical Screening & Water Readiness

Foundational Movement Science

Condition Specific Clinical Applications

ATI-FMATTM Progression Ladder

Clinical Documentation & Reporting

All content is delivered online through a combination of text, images, and video to support a well-rounded learning experience.

Participants are required to have access to a pool to practice and apply course concepts prior to implementing them in clinical practice.

Evaluation will be through a multiple choice quiz at the end of each chapter and a practical test via video submission prior to course completion to demonstrate therapist competence and to confirm independent practice in the pool.

Upon completion, participants will demonstrate the knowledge and confidence required to safely and effectively incorporate aquatic therapy into clinical practice to optimize patient outcomes.
